Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, but its forces withdrew from around the capital Kyiv and surrounding regions to Belarus and western Russia in early April. Russia has since refocused its efforts on taking control of the east and south of Ukraine.

On Friday, Russia confirmed that it carried out an airstrike on Kyiv during a visit by the UN's secretary-general, the first such attack on the Ukrainian capital in nearly two weeks, and in which a journalist also died.
Russia's defense ministry said, "it had deployed high-precision, long-range air-based weapons that destroyed the production buildings of the Artyom missile and space enterprise in Kyiv".

Volodymyr Zelensky Ukraine's president stated the strikes, which at once followed his talks with United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, were an attempt by Russia "to humiliate the UN and everything that the organization represents".
The powerful blast had ripped out walls and doors, leaving piles of rubble on the ground.

As the war continues it has claimed lots of lives, Kyiv has admitted Russian forces have captured a string of villages within the Donbas vicinity. However Ukrainian forces, armed via western allies, additionally reported small victories along the frontline.
On Friday a Pentagon official said the Kremlin's eastern offensive was "behind schedule" as airstrikes were failing to facilitate lightning ground offensives.
More Western armaments are due to arrive in Ukraine, with US President Joe Biden on Thursday seeking billions of dollars from Congress to boost supplies. A senior US official said, "the package would keep Ukraine's government and military going through to the start of October".
Russia's defense ministry in recent days has said, "Russian forces have struck Ukrainian military sites hosting Western-supplied weapons and ammunition", a claim denied by a senior NATO official.
Ukraine says, "Russia stole several hundred thousand tonnes of grain"
Ukraine’s foreign ministry accused Russia on Thursday of stealing grain in territory it has occupied, an act it said increased the threat to global food security. Agriculture minister Mykola Solskyi said grain theft had increased in the last two weeks.
Speaking to Ukrainian national TV, Taras Vysotskiy expressed concern that most of what he said was 1.5 million tonnes of grain stored in occupied territory could also be stolen by Russian forces.
Concerns
The current conflict has severely strained U.S.-Russia relations and increased the risk of a wider European conflict. Tensions are likely to increase between Russia and neighboring NATO member countries that would likely involve the United States, due to alliance security commitments. Additionally, the conflict in Ukraine will have broader ramifications for future cooperation on critical issues like arms control, cybersecurity, nuclear nonproliferation, energy security, counter-terrorism, and political solutions in Syria, Libya, and elsewhere.
